Aloha Kakou,

My name is Benjamin D. Shafer from Kahana Bay, Oahu. I am asking for your trust and vote in the City and County of Honolulu, City Council District 2 Seat elections.

The harsh reality in these economic bad times is sobering.  Families are truly struggling. Livable wages are being slashed, prime agricultural lands and open space are being swallowed up by development instead of being used wisely, and property taxes continue to rise for OUR KUPUNA. The homeless keeps getting moved and their population grows. The “mortgage fiasco” continues to consume more homes. We the people are losing to corporate and political greed.

When elected by the people of District 2.  These will be some of my priorities:

  • Fight for the working people whose livable wages are being constantly inundated by  out of control cost-of-living increases. We are solely dependent on oil for all our needs.
  • Work to implement alternative energy resources.
  • Push for agricultural sustainability of Oahu.
  • Persist that the Ko’olaupoko-Ko’olauloa area continues as low-density and in keeping the Country-Country.
  • Support standardized property taxes for our Kupuna.
  • Seek solutions to the “mortgage fiasco” so our families will not continue to lose their homes.
  • Assist in finding solutions to the homeless problem.
  • Address the issues of actual affordable rentals and homeownership.

All of these issues need to be addressed and many others need to be addressed now.

  • I will not use any tax payer’s monies for my campaign.  (Let’s save taxpayer monies)
  • I will not take any campaign donations or hold fundraisers for my campaign.  (Instead help your families, neighbors or friends who are already struggling)
  • I will not make any signs for my campaign to be placed along the highways and streets. (Let’s try to keep Hawaii beautiful instead)

What this means to you, is that I will not have glossy printed campaign brochures, advertisements, or televised commercials.

I will not hold any campaign fundraisers where $25.00 - $100.00 donations are the norm and the status quo continues unabated.

I will not be indebted to anyone but the taxpayer, who entrusted me with their individual votes.

I only ask that you vote for me on September 18, 2010 at your voting precinct or by absentee ballot before September 11, 2010.
