Opponents of Homosexual Marriage Gather at State Capitol

Opponents of same-sex civil unions rallied yesterday at the Hawaii state capitol. The measure, HB 444, came close to passing last year with a strong push by Democratic legislators, spearheaded by Rep. Blake Oshiro, Democrat, District 33 (Aiea, Halawa Valley, Halawa Heights, Aiea Heights). It is expected to be reconsidered by the state legislature this year. The measure would give homosexual partners the same status as heterosexual married couples, with the main difference being the name to make it more palatable. It is expected that if passed, substituting "marriage" for "civil union" at a later date would be a relatively simple name adjustment. It will be difficult to look intelligent when arguing that one does not want a one-word adjustment for a fait accompli, especially if one was acquiescent or proactive in the passage of this bill.

There was a large turnout of the largely Christian group with cars driving by honking their approval.

As the rally wound up, ralliers were asked by an excellent speaker, Caroline, "How many of us will make a commitment today to read the newspaper, to read the testimony, to come down to the legislature. Not to depend on some radio person to tell us how to vote. How many are going to be informed voters?"

Many raised their hands, with some whooping and hollering.

"And one last thing. How many will make the commitment to love our brothers and sisters who are on the other side of a vote?"

This got the most enthusiastic positive response of all.

Separately, a much smaller group of supporters of homosexual marriage held services at an Episcopalian church, St. Clement's, located on Wilder Avenue in Honolulu.
