14 File to Run for Todd Apo's Seat

Honolulu City Council Districts

Fourteen people are running to fill Todd Apo's District 1 unexpired term on the Honolulu City Council. The deadline for filing candidacy papers was Friday, November 19.

Todd Apo resigned as of November 8 to work for Disney at Ko Olina. The winner will be set to hold the office until its original expiration, January 2, 2013.

District 1 covers Ewa, Ewa Beach, Honouliuli, West Loch, Kapolei, Kalaeloa (Barber's Point), Honokai Hale and Nanakai Gardens, Ko'Olina, Nanakuli, Wai'anae, Makaha, Keaau, and Makua.

The candidates are:

Todd Apo
  • Tom Berg (ran as a Republican for District 42 house seat [Waipahu-Ewa area] in the general election and lost against Democratic incumbent Rida Cabanilla Arakawa)
  • Kioni Dudley, Ph.D., saving agricultural land champion
  • Jason T. Espero (son of state senator Will Espero [D-Ewa Beach area])
  • Mel Kahele (local 625, Ironworkers Union)
  • Celeste (Lacaden) Lacuesta (ran as Democrat for state senate District 20 [Ewa Beach area], lost to incumbent Will Espero)
  • Chris Lewis
  • Matthew LoPresti (Hawaii Pacific University assistant professor of philosophy and humanities)
  • James K. Manaku
  • Rose Martinez
  • Bob McDermott
    Kioni Dudley
  • John P. Roco (ran as Republican for U.S. Senator Dan Inouye's seat and lost in the primary to fellow Republican Cam Cavasso)
  • Patty Kahanamoku Teruya, Nanakuli-Maili Neighborhood Board chairwoman
  • Gary Kahinano Velleses
  • Victoria (Cissy) Yuen

The election will be by mail. However, if they prefer, voters in the district will be able to vote in person at either the Office of the City Clerk, Honolulu Hale, 530 S. King Street, Honolulu, or Kapolei Hale, 1000 Ulu Ohia Street, Kapolei, Oahu, Hawaii.
