Public invited to participate in huge sign-waving event – Aloha ‘Aina   Stop Ho’opili

Aloha ‘Aina, the group that staged the 10,000 person march in Waikiki last month, is joining with the Friends of Makakilo, Save O’ahu Farmlands, the Hawaiian community, and many others to stage a huge sign waving event to protest approval of the Ho’opili project with its 11,750 homes. The event will be held on two days, Friday, October 16 from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m., and again on Saturday, October 17 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the corners of Farrington and Makakilo Drive in Kapolei.

The Ho’opili issue is still very much alive. A Hawai’i Supreme Court decision is expected soon. The Land Use Commission re-opens consideration of the project on October 23, and a request awaits hearing for the Honolulu Ethics Commission to nullify the City Council vote because of massive campaign donations to all councilmembers from the construction community.

Ho’opili will put 12,000 more cars onto H1, which already has the worst freeway traffic in the land. It will destroy one-third of the Oahu farmland currently producing fresh vegetables for the local market, land we will one day need in order to survive. It is time for a public protest. Aloha ‘Aina (Love for the Land) and the other organizations ask the public to get out of their cars, take a sign, and join the mass sign-waving, even for just a while. Bring the family. 100 T-shirts (at $10) and 500 signs will be available.
