U.S. Supreme Court Expert Steve Shapiro to Discuss Outlook for Civil Liberties

Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Blaisdell Center Maui Room

Honolulu – Controversial civil liberties and civil rights issues have recently faced the U.S. Supreme Court, riveting the nation. In the aftermath of decisions on “Citizens United,” Arizona’s “Show Me Your Papers” immigration law, Health Care Reform and warrantless GPS tracking by police, how secure are our rights? What important cases are on the horizon, and how might the upcoming election impact the Court and expand or erode fundamental rights?

The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai‘i Foundation (“ACLU”) tackles these questions in a free public forum with national ACLU Legal Director Steve Shapiro. With over 25 years of U.S. Supreme Court experience, Shapiro manages over 90 lawyers at the ACLU headquarters in New York, where he is also an adjunct professor of constitutional law at Columbia Law School. Shapiro also serves on the Policy Committee of Human Rights Watch.
